Rectory, forester's lodge & former school
The two-storey rectory with a hipped roof and a quarrystone enclosure to the east of the parish church was built in 1784. The maintenance of the rectory and the church was the responsibility of the Würzburg
St Burkard’s Abbey as the lord of the village. In the past, the chapter of the monastery was authorised to collect the so-called tithe.1
Since the advent of pilgrimage, the predecessor building of today’s rectory also served as a tavern with overnight accommodation for pilgrims. Next to the rectory is the former chaplain’s building, which was built in 1969. The rectory is connected to the chaplain’s house by a glass extension. If you look to the right, you can see the former forestry estate. It consists of the former forester’s house and barn. The two-storey residential building with a mansard hipped roof was built in 1780 and is now privately owned. It has been preserved in its original architectural style. 2
The building below the vicarage (Herrenweg 3), whose cellar was built in the 16th century and which was later extended at the end of the 19th century, housed the old school as well as the municipal administration and the kindergarten before 1945.
After the Second World War, it was used as living space and then as a youth centre, also known as JUZ. Today, following a general refurbishment, it once again houses flats.3
Christoph Stumpf worked here as a school teacher and municipal clerk until 1796. He achieved national fame as an artist and engraver. His best-known works include illustrations of theological works and children’s books.4
The old cemetery on Herrenweg above the church is a walled complex with burial monuments from the late 19th century to the present day and a memorial to those who died in the war of 1866 and the First World War. The funeral parlour with mortuary was built in 1935 by the municipality of Höchberg and renovated in 2008. The colourful stained glass windows at the rear were designed using the fusing technique by the artist Rosemarie Rüttinger and handmade by her.5
